Adult and Teen Tutors Needed for the Avondale Summer Reading Program - 1st - 3rd Grades
Did you know that there is a strong correlation between a student's reading ability in the third grade and whether they graduate from high school? This is a major conclusion from a recent CALDER working paper by Dan Goldhaber, et al. It basically states that if a child is still struggling to read after the third grade, they will continue this struggle throughout their time in school.
In fact, the third grade is typically the last point at which classroom instruction will focus on the various skills needed to understand text accurately and fluently. In the fourth grade, learning to read shifts to reading to learn. Students are then expected to gain information by reading independently. Therefore, third grade readers who have not been able to grasp basic reading skills will flounder as more complex vocabulary is introduced, and comprehension becomes the primary goal.*
As most of you know, virtual learning was difficult for most children in 2020, but the students in communities like Avondale were significantly set back in their education competencies. But you can help reverse this trend and change the outcome for one child.
Compassionate Justice is recruiting volunteers for a Summer Reading Program that was created by Back2Back Ministries. This one-on-one tutoring will help students increase their reading abilities so that they are on grade level for school in the fall.
We provide all the materials used. All you do is help a child with sight words, read appropriate grade-level books with them, and demonstrate that learning can be fun! Who knows, your help could launch this child into a world of learning they never knew was possible. It might even expand their vision of themselves and the world around them.
If you're available in July, why not invest five hours a week tutoring a student? It's a tiny investment with potential enormous returns!
