Celebrate Arbor Day and plant trees with us!
This is a planting is part of a renovation and enhancing of the Viet Nam Memorial landscape basin – an ongoing series of improvements that started with the addition of a peaceful garden space of PTSD veterans and all people to enjoy, funded by a private donor. Last fall on National Public Lands Day, 11,000 bulbs were planted throughout the memorial area and are now planting a series of trees and shrubs as the next phase to replace the lost Austrian Pines that are in decline in Eden Park and throughout Cincinnati.
Event location: Eden Park @ Viet Nam Memorial Garden Eden Park Drive, 45202
Parking along Cliff Drive will be clearly marked.
Please be mindful of physical distancing when gathering together at the beginning of project.
Volunteers will use shovels to dig holes to plant trees. Pitchforks will be used to load mulch into wheelbarrows & rakes to distribute mulch around planted trees throughout the designated areas.
Some of the advantages of mulch: Protects the soil from erosion, reduces compaction from the impact of heavy rains, conserves moisture, reducing the need for frequent waterings, maintains a more even soil temperature, prevents weed growth, provides a protective barrier from equipment like mowers, and lastly - it provides a "finished" look to the garden.
Volunteers should be prepared for the weather in layered clothing and long pants. Wear clothing suitable for dirty work and movement. Close-toed shoes and a face covering are required. Recommended: Work gloves (if you own them), sunscreen, and a refillable water bottle. There will be work gloves available to borrow and a water cooler will be provided on site for volunteers to refill bottles. Cincinnati Parks discourages single use plastics.
