Tikkun Farm - Alpaca Farm Earthworks

Expired

Description

Volunteers would help us implement a permaculture/earthworks plan to capture water and distribute it across our landscape in a way that supports existing, and creates new, ecosystems. Volunteers would learn about permaculture principles and contribute in a significant way to our land design plans. Over the course of this week long project participants will experience the satisfaction of observing the dramatic impact of their efforts by seeing the "before" and "after" affect for their work. This outside project will focus on terracing a sloped landscape by creating safe steps down the hill, creating cascading water swales, and cutting paths into slope for safer walking. We are working farm, and volunteers will have a chance to spend time with our alpacas, pot belly pigs, and assortment of birds: turkeys, ducks, chickens, etc. This project contributes to Tikkun Farm's mission 'Heal People, Repair Community and Restore Creation". By transforming the landscape, participants will be "restoring creation" by preventing water runoff from the farm, directing it instead into new ecosystems supporting diverse plant and wildlife. This project will support our work to "heal people" by creating accessible spaces on our farm for guests to spend time in natural beauty. Research shows that time spent in nature helps regulate and soothe the brains and bodies of survivors of abuse.

We request that volunteers park on Adams St. or in the public parking on Perry St a few blocks from the farm. Volunteers will be onsite at the same time we welcome guests to shop for food at Free Market. We try to keep our parking lot open for these guests.
