For years, MLK Day has been referred to as "A day on, not a day off." If you are inspired to make a difference in your community, Cincinnati Parks has opportunities to get out and serve!

Cincinnati Parks will have several service sites in community parks. Help us maintain safe, clean & beautiful parks for communities throughout the city, look for the location closest to your neighborhood.

Project Locations and Overview

Burnet Woods, Clifton - Invasive Species Removal, 9AM - 12PM
Volunteers will work with Parks staff in an ongoing effort to improve the natural environment of the park by removing trash and invasive plant species in select areas of the park. Work will include removal of honeysuckle with loppers and handsaws, dragging brush and using litter sticks for litter removal. 

**All other locations are full**

MLK Park, Avondale - Park Beautification and Maintenance Project, 9AM - 12PM
Task may also include litter pick up, honeysuckle removal and brush clearing. 

McEvoy Park, College Hill  - Park Beautification and Maintenance Project, 9AM - 12PM
Volunteers will work with Parks staff in an ongoing effort to restore the natural habitat and  improve the overall safety of the park. Volunteers will be clearing out boulders, some litter pick up and honeysuckle removal. Volunteers will use loppers and handsaws to cut honeysuckle, drag brush and use litter sticks for litter removal.

Inwood, Mt. Auburn - Invasive Species Removal, 9AM - 12PM
Volunteers will work with Parks staff in an ongoing effort to improve the overall safety and natural environment of the park by removing trash and invasive plant species in select areas of the park. Work will include removal of honeysuckle with loppers and handsaws, dragging brush and using litter sticks for litter removal. 

Washington Park, OTR - Horticulture Assistance, 9AM - 12PM 
Volunteers will work with Parks Naturalist to cut back grasses and shrubs in landscpaed beds. Loppers, hand pruners will be used to cut back, volunteers will drag & stack plant material.  

Sawyer Point, Riverfront - Horticulture Assistance, 9AM - 12PM 
Volunteers will work with Parks Naturalist to tear out an existing landscape.  

Walnut Woods, Evanston - Invasive Species Removal, 1PM - 4PM
Volunteers will work with Parks staff, our friends from the Civic Garden Center, and community leaders on an on-going collaboration to reclaim and renovate acres of neglected land along Victory Parkway, in front of Walnut Hills high School. Work will focus on invasive species removal (English Ivy & Euonymus) and rerouting & mulching trail. Volunteers will use loppers and hands and hand tools to remove ivy, pitchforks to load mulch into wheelbarrows and hard rakes to distribute. 

California Woods, Anderson area - Invasive Species Removal, 1PM - 4PM 
Volunteers will work with Parks Naturalist to restore native forest for wild flower restoration. Work will include removal of honeysuckle and Japanese Chaff Flower with loppers and handsaws, piling brush and possibly mulching trails.  

Volunteers should be prepared for the weather (lightweight clothing) and wear long pants and long sleeves to protect against thorns and possible poison ivy encounters. Required: Close-toed shoes, face covering, work gloves (if you own them) and a refillable water bottle. There will be a limited number of work gloves available to borrow.

Regarding Covid-19:

In efforts to stop the spread, for the safety of our staff, volunteers and community please consider the following guidelines:

  • If your temperature is higher than 100.4 within four hours of the project, please do not attend. Notify Christyl @ 513.240.5735 so staff can be updated.
  • Do not participate if you or someone in your home is symptomatic (e.g., fever, cough, shortness of breath), or if someone you’ve come into close contact with is under investigation or diagnosed with a laboratory-confirmed case of COVID-19.
  • Please use face covering and practice social distancing at all times while on the site.
  • Please use gloves at all times to handle the tools and equipment.
  • Volunteers will work in groups of nine or less. All project logisitics are coordinated to adhere to social distancing guidelines.
