How our organization engages UC students

This club seeks to involve students who want to make a positive difference during their careers by improving health and healthcare for the underserved– either here in the US or overseas. IPJH is focused on the knowledge and skills related to the connection of poverty, justice, and health. It helps support and foster student interest in improving the health of poor and vulnerable populations. Our specific aims are: 1. To teach participants knowledge and skills specific to the care of poor and underserved populations internationally and here in the US. 2. To develop and sustain student interest in caring for poor and underserved populations through exposure to positive faculty role models, community experiences, and clinical opportunities in underserved care. 3. To develop leadership and advocacy skills in the care of the poor and underserved populations. Specific activities focus on the following areas: 1. Advocacy: IPJH students participate in advocacy groups: Homeless Health, Women’s and Children’s Health, Immigrant Health and Legislative Outreach. 2. Education: IPJH strives to raise the awareness of UCCOM students about issues faced by underserved populations. Book, essay, or article discussions are held in the homes of faculty. Practical experience is gained by interacting with the populations that students serve in advocacy groups. 3. Service: In addition to the service provided through the advocacy groups, a goal of IPJH is also to foster service by members of IPJH and the UCCOM. We coordinate numerous service opportunities, including community health education workshops and our Annual UCCOM Day of Service in the spring.
