The Mt. Washington Cemetery, founded in 1855, was abandoned, left to the care of the City of Cincinnati in the late 1970s. The city never did anything to care for the cemetery during the seven years it was their responsibility and the cemetery became a blighted area in the community. In 1985, a small group of Mt. Washington residents formed the non-profit Mt. Washington Cemetery Association to raise funds for the care of the cemetery. For forty-one years, donations, volunteer work, grave sales, tour proceeds, and other fundraisers have taken the cemetery from ill-tended to beautiful. Due to all the trees we’ve planted over the past forty-one years, we are now a nationally recognized arboretum.
UC students have assisted us with green-up events in the past, and their help has been invaluable!
