Hospice of Cincinnati (HOC) a TriHealth Organization

About our Organization

Hospice of Cincinnati (HOC) is the leading provider of Palliative and Hospice care in the Cincinnati region serving over 6,000 patients annually at 4 inpatient care centers, most senior communities and private homes.

How our organization engages UC students

HOC has two roles that are a great fit for UC Students. All positions require medical screening, security screening and orientation provided at no cost to volunteers. Eligible for Service Learning or Capstone classes. Physician Shadow available after 60 hours of service.

Concierge - Assist with Meals, Bedside Companionship and general support of the unit and patient needs. Available at Christ Hospital unit, Anderson IPCC, Blue Ash IPCC and Hamilton IPCC. 4 hour shifts. High need evenings and weekends.

Vigil presence - High need for nights and weekends. Provide a compassionate presence and promote a relaxing environment for those in the last 24 - 48 hours of life when symptom management is not required.  Sometimes patients may be alone or accompanied by family members. The duties include active listening, empathetic conversations, observing for symptom changes and escalating needs to the HOC care team. No hands-on care is required. Students are allowed to bring study materials while sitting vigil. The minimum shift is 2 hours although 4 hours is preferred. Shifts can be prescheduled or sign up on demand. Transportation is required as most vigil requests occur in Assisted Living or Nursing home facilities.
