About our Organization

The National Consumers League is the nation’s oldest consumer advocacy organization. Founded in 1899, our mission has always been to promote and protect the interests of workers and consumers. Headquartered in our nation’s capital, NCL fights for consumers and workers on the issues that matter most. Our flagship programs— LifeSmarts, Fraud.org, the Child Labor Coalition, Script Your Future, and Consumers for Safe CBD—provide vital education for consumers of all ages and backgrounds and enable consumers to voice their concerns about the marketplace. From the beltway and beyond, we advocate on behalf of consumers and workers at the local and state levels and before Congress and federal agencies.  To further its consumer education mission, NCL operates LifeSmarts, a broad-based consumer education program that provides real-world education to middle school and high school students across the country. The goal of the LifeSmarts program is to create savvy consumers who will be better equipped for adult life in today’s complex, global marketplace.

How our organization engages UC students

LifeSmarts, the nation’s premier consumer program, has never been more relevant. Entering its 29th year, Lifesmarts provides real-world education for students who learn about core consumer topics and develop critical thinking skills. Participants focus on five key topic areas: consumer rights and responsibilities, the environment, health and safety, personal finance, and technology. The goal of LifeSmarts is to create consumer savvy young people who will be well equipped for adult life in today’s complex, global marketplace.
