Volunteer: Dungeons and Dragons - Assistant DMsThe Cincinnati Ethics Center works with several Cincinnati Public Libraries to provide a Dungeons and Dragons experience as an afterschool program. Each table requires a Dungeon Master (DM) to guide players through the fantasy world we've created and guide them through the challenges and adventures they embark on. We are looking for UC students who are interested in engaging with students by DMing the adventures we have created. These adventures are also designed to get players to grapple with ethical dilemmas in the game. Should the party chase the dragon and retrieve the magical weapon he stole or should they stay and put out the fire that could burn down the entire village? We visit several libraries once a week and we bring a team of DMs with us. To participate in the visits to one of those libraries, the time commitment would be 4 hours/week for about 10 weeks. Familiarity with tabletop roleplaying games in encouraged. A conversation guide, including questions and prompts, will be provided to students during program training. All phone sessions will be conducted through achi’s contact center system and students will login to the contact center system to perform their sessions, providing a secure and consistent connection method for every call. All calls will be recorded for quality assurance. All participating students are required to complete and submit post-session reflection prompts describing their sessions with their older adult and the stories discussed. These submissions will be utilized in the creation of a book for the older adult that will be gifted to them at the end of the program. Volunteer: Alms Park Service Projects Special Community Event Opportunity! Bluegrass and BBQ at Alms Park Friday, September 26 | 4:30pm - 9:30pm Event support for Alms Allies! Volunteers will help set up, provide support throughout the event with basic event tasks and help break down. Volunteers over 21 can help serve beer. Sign up Below! Work with Parks Staff and members of the Alms Park Advisory Council (Alms Park Allies) in their efforts to improve the overall health of the park and support maintenance efforts. Projects will often include invasive species mitigation efforts as well as beautification efforts and grounds maintenance tasks. The removal of invasive species is part of ongoing efforts to restore our native forest understory. Volunteers will use loppers and handsaws to cut invasive Amur honeysuckle and may also be cutting invasive porcelain berry vine. On some volunteer days we will also plant native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers. Non - native plants such as honeysuckle and porcelain berry grow aggressively in this climate and create real problems for our native ecosystem. These invasive plants choke out the natural growth of native plants that provide more for a healthy under story and more for local wildlife. There are also safety concerns, as these plants grow fast and thick, and obstruct sightlines in public areas. Poison ivy (a native plant) also grows in these parks, please be cautious and aware of your surroundings. Volunteers should be prepared for the weather in clothing appropriate for the temperature, wear long pants and layers (long sleeves), close-toed shoes are required. Suggested: face covering, gloves & refillable water bottle. Cincinnati Parks discourages single - use plastics. Cincinnati Parks and Alms Allies will supply tools and equipment. The location to meet for volunteer events is the Pavilion in Alms Park! 4H6C+P6 Cincinnati, Ohio Please note: BBQ & Bluegrass is a community event, not a habitat restoration event. We welcome volunteers for this event as well! Organization: Cincinnati Parks Special Community Event Opportunity! Volunteer: Mill Creek Litter Removal- Caldwell BallfieldMarjorie Book seeks volunteers to work alongside teens and adults with physical and/or intellectual disabilities as we participate in this volunteer opportunity. Volunteers will receive guidance to assist people with disabilities with the tasks required, or simply work in pairs or small groups and converse while volunteering. The Mill Creek Trail is a multi-use walking and biking trail that runs in segments from Carthage to Northside. We will use reacher/grabber tools to pick up litter along the trail and prevent it from polluting the Mill Creek, Cincinnati’s urban stream that stretches from Butler County to the Ohio River. We may also pull invasive species. We don’t walk especially far during this service project, and so the activity level should be accessible to all. We do bring a few wheelchairs with us, just in case they are needed. We’ll work rain or shine and meet in the parking lot of the Caldwell Sports Complex. Please dress for the weather, which will likely be cool. Marjorie Book will have ponchos available in case it rains. There is a portable toilet at this location, but only in the summer and the fall and may not be available at this time. To help you, and our participants to get the most of the experience, volunteers are asked to read our volunteer handout prior to attending an event.
