Volunteer: Summer intern

We are a major nonprofit land trust on the West side of Cincinnati, along the Ohio River.  We have a number of properties where we maintain hiking trails and work hard to restore the land to native vegetation.

If you are looking to get all 30 of your hours this summer, consider us.  We have many things to do, depending on our needs and your interests.  We have trails to maintain, vernal pools to repair, bridges to fix, invasives to remove, and even 'desk' work inside our nature center.

Call if interested.  We use many UC volunteers during the school year.

Volunteer: Volunteer Community Research Scientist

Community Research Scientists are volunteers who work alongside a Field Research Assistant to collect data for two parallel studies: the Cincinnati Urban Pollinator Biodiversity Study and the Urban Ant Diet Preference and Diversity Study. Together, these studies examine how urban wildlife communities differ across neighborhood types defined by their environmental stress, temperature burden, and socio-economic context, contributing to a longer-term goal of establishing Cincinnati as a formal Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) site.

No prior research experience is required. All data collection methods will be taught at the sample site. No experience with iNaturalist or taxon identification is necessary.

What you'll do in the field: During each 2-hour visit, volunteers will conduct 50-meter transect walks to record flower-visiting insects and flowering plant species, using iNaturalist to photograph insects and blooming plants. This data will be used to compare pollinator diversity and abundance across neighborhood types. Volunteers will also set up and monitor bait stations with four types of food resources to record ant species and their food preferences, comparing foraging behavior across microclimates at each site.

Commitment and schedule: This is a 7-week program running June 22 – August 10, 2026. We visit 7 sample sites located in Clifton, Wyoming OH, and Indian Hill once per week. Each visit is 2 hours, held on weekdays during either the 9–11am or 12–2pm slot. Participation is fully flexible and you may join for one visit or as many as you'd like. Weekend makeup days are available if a visit is cancelled due to weather. View the full collection schedule here.

Beyond data collection: Volunteers are invited to participate in interpreting and communicating study findings to community partners and city leaders, including Cincinnati Parks, the Mill Creek Alliance, and City Council, turning the data you collect into real advocacy for Cincinnati neighborhoods.

Organization: Queen City Pollinator Project

Volunteer: Thrifting with a Purpose

Want to make your volunteer time count in a stylish, sustainable way? Join Mary Magdalen House and the UC Thrifting Club for an exclusive opportunity to thrift essential clothing for our unhoused neighbors in Over-the-Rhine (OTR). Thrifting is only an hour long, but extra time is allocated for transportation. We meet in the parking lot at St. Vincent DePaul facing Chickering Ave between 8:50 and 9:10(+-). Please ensure that you are at this location and not the warehouse on Este. ✨ This Isn’t Your Average Thrifting Trip: Through a special partnership, you’ll get exclusive early access to clothing before it hits the thrift store floor(in case you want to buy something while you're out), plus a behind-the-scenes look at how donations are sorted and processed. How it works: You meet a guide or liaison before the mission starts to get a debriefing. You'll receive a “shopping list” with specific needs and sizes—your target: find clothing that brings dignity and style to our guests. ♻️ Why It Matters: This is more than shopping. You’re giving quality clothes a second life, reducing waste, and helping people feel seen, respected, and confident in what they wear.

Volunteer: Bike Camp Volunteer

Are you interested in supporting bike camp? Join us for be.well’s one week, learn-to-ride program for kids with chronic or complex medical conditions.

During bike week, riders attend the same 75 minute session each day for five consecutive days. The first two days of camp are spent working on indoor riding, using adapted roller bikes. Riders will eventually graduate to outdoor practice on their own, 2-wheeled bikes. All sessions are led by iCan Shine staff and supported by the be.well team.

At all times, riders are required to have spotters, who help with bike speed and braking, while riders focus on other foundational cycling skills. We are looking for your support!

To staff the camp, we will require spotters for >200 volunteer slots.Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age. Many volunteers who are spotting at the beginning of the week are "walking" with riders. By Friday, a spotter's fitness and ability to jog are required.

We encourage your volunteer participation in more than one signup slot (e.g., back to back sessions) or regularly volunteering for the same session time during the week, in order to foster relationship building with riders.

Volunteer: Theater Help: Lillian Hellman's Watch on the Rhine

Marjorie Book has been producing full length theatrical productions since 1993 with inclusive casts represented by a variety of abilities and disabilities and represented by various age groups from ages 12 – 86.  This summer, we will produce a full length play.   We also can use volunteers to help with clerical tasks and to help actors run lines on any particular night of rehearsals. We would welcome volunteers for one night or for many evenings.  At certain points, we can use volunteer help in moving supplies from our storage space in Over the Rhine to locations in Clifton.  We do not hold auditions, although we do engage in some staged readings during the first rehearsal and then cast parts.  Please let us know if you are interested in being involved.  All are welcome, and it is not necessary to be an accomplished reader (or even a reader) to participate in the play.

Watch on the Rhine is a 1941 play by Lillian Hellman about a German anti-fascist, Kurt Muller, who seeks refuge with his American wife's family in Washington D.C. as WWII looms, but his past catches up with him through a Nazi-sympathizing houseguest, forcing a confrontation with fascism and moral duty.

To help you, and our participants to get the most of the experience, volunteers are asked to read our volunteer handout prior to attending an event.

We are always looking for actors, with and without prior experience, to join the cast.  Most actors are able to make 80 percent of the rehearsals, but almost all of the actors miss some rehearsals. If you are interested in acting, please come to the first rehearsal, or contact us at: 513-328-6300.

Volunteer: Down Syndrome Association of Greater Cincinnati - iCan Bike Camp 2026

Volunteer Opportunities working with individuals with Down syndrome.  Our iCan Bike Camp will be held July 6-10, 2026 at Harrison High School in Cincinnati.  iCan Bike Camp uses adapted bicycles, a specialized instructional program and trained staff to enable individuals with disabilities to learn to ride a two-wheel bicycle. Riders attend one 75 minute session each day for five consecutive days where they learn to ride while accompanied and encouraged by volunteer “spotters”. Over the course of the week, we continually adjust the bikes in an effort to challenge riders balance as they gradually discover the skill and joy of riding.
