Opportunities From: Center for Community Engagement

Volunteer: Winton Hills Location - Saturday Hoops

Saturday Hoops is a free group mentoring program of Cincinnati Youth Collaborative that strives to make a safe space for kids (ages 5-18) on Saturdays for them to learn new things, meet new friends, and develop skills that will help them become future leaders. We create this opportunity by providing food (breakfast and lunch) and doing activities such as basketball, soccer, arts and crafts, reading, yoga, football, workouts, and so much more. We also establish this safe space by having our volunteers promote a positive environment and demonstrating our core themes to students (Cheerful Giver, Hard Worker, Overcomer, and Good Steward). Join us in connecting with kids every Saturday from 9:30 am to 12:30 at one of our locations (Avondale, West End, Winton Hills).

Volunteer: Make a Difference this Semester – Volunteer to Serve a Meal!

Looking for a simple but powerful way to impact your community?

St. Francis Seraph Ministries invites UC students and friends to join us in serving breakfast or dinner to our neighbors in need — just a short walk or drive from campus!

Every meal we serve is more than food — it’s a chance to offer kindness, respect, and dignity to guests experiencing poverty. Volunteers help create a welcoming space where everyone feels seen and valued.

Volunteer Opportunities (Monday–Friday, excluding holidays):
Breakfast: 6:45 – 9:00 AM
Dinner: 3:45 – 6:00 PM
Come once, or return as often as your schedule allows — every shift makes a difference.

We’re conveniently located 1.5 miles from UC in the St. Anthony Center (Liberty & Republic). Free parking is available on Liberty St. and behind St. Francis Seraph School (enter from Vine St., park between the green school fence and Hubert St.)

Sign up here:  https://sfsministries.galaxydigital.com/need/

Start this semester by sharing your time, your energy, and a little bit of hope. We’d love to welcome you!

Please send us your resume and a few examples of your work from your portfolio.
After we review that information, we will have a zoom conversation with you to tell you more about our wishes.  You will be able to keep a copy of this project for your portfolio showing the editing process you completed.  The one hour time frame is for the initial meeting.  We will gladly sign for time used to create the project.

Goal is to have a finished project by early October.

Volunteer: Companionship Volunteer

A Companion Volunteer at Bella Care Hospice of Cincinnati plays a vital role in bringing comfort, connection, and emotional support to patients during their end-of-life journey. These volunteers provide non-medical, one-on-one companionship by spending quality time with patients—offering conversation, reading, listening to music, playing games, or simply sitting quietly to provide a comforting presence.
Companion Volunteers help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation for our patients and often become a familiar and friendly face in their lives. Volunteers may visit patients in private homes, assisted living facilities, or nursing homes—wherever the patient calls home.
This role is ideal for compassionate individuals who are good listeners, reliable, and genuinely want to make a difference. Volunteers receive comprehensive training and ongoing support from the Bella Care Hospice team. Flexible scheduling allows volunteers to serve in a way that fits their availability while fulfilling a deeply meaningful mission.
By sharing your time, heart, and presence, you can help bring peace, dignity, and companionship to those who need it most.

Volunteer: Literacy Tutoring at GiGi’s Playhouse Down Syndrome Achievement Center

GiGi’s Playhouse Cincinnati is looking for dedicated UC students to serve as 1:1 literacy tutors for individuals with Down syndrome. Reading is more than just a skill—it’s a key to independence, inclusion, and lifelong learning. But here’s the challenge: we can only match about 50% of our participants due to a shortage of volunteers. You can help change that.

As a tutor, you’ll be paired with one student and commit to just one hour a week for 10–15 weeks. We’ll provide all the training and materials you need, tailored to how individuals with Down syndrome learn best. You’ll use a proven, research-based approach that focuses on comprehension, speech, memory, and most importantly—confidence.

Why volunteer?

Make a direct impact by helping someone reach their full potential

Flexible schedule—just one hour per week at a time that works best for YOU!

Gain experience with multi-sensory and evidence-based instruction

Build meaningful relationships and grow as a communicator and educator

Benefits for learners include:

Increased confidence and self-esteem

Improved communication and social interaction

Stronger speech and language development

Greater inclusion at school and in the community

Program Highlights:

Students as young as 3 years old can participate

Weekly sessions are 45–60 minutes

All books and materials are customized to each learner’s level and interests

This is a great opportunity for future educators, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, or anyone passionate about literacy, inclusion, and making a difference!

Please enroll as a tutor here: Literacy Tutor Application

Volunteer: About Me Board Assembly

Each “All About Me Board” is designed to capture the Favorite Things, Life Story and What Matters Most. Many of our patients struggle with communication barriers or advanced dementia. At a glance, anyone that walks into the room can have access to important information to give that patient a great experience. Each board is purposefully designed to look homemade, unique and specially made just for that patient. Pictures can be added to provide recognition and points of conversation.

The HOC End of Life Doula will sit down and complete the board with either the caregiver and/or patient. Overall, HOC Navigators serve 6,000 patients each year – so we need a lot of help!!!! Our solution is to recruit Community Service Volunteers to help. Gather your businesses, churches, schools and social groups to do together. We also have open service days where you can meet new friends!

Materials are provided or you can host a drive for scrapbook paper, stickers and glue to support the effort prior to serving. HOC will provide a workspace, speaker and facilitator if desired. Each person needs to bring their own pair of scissors, a water bottle, creativity and desire to make a difference! This project can also be done as a remote service opportunity.

You must have an appointment to volunteer. Please email Lauren_Athey@trihealth.com to schedule.
