More than 36 million adults in the United States cannot read or write above a third-grade level. If you like to read and want to help adults improve their reading skills, Adult New Readers needs your help.
We train volunteers to work one-on-one with adults, 18 and over, to teach them to read or to improve their reading skills.
Volunteers attend a 3-hour training workshop. Free training and materials are provided by Adult New Readers. Tutors meet weekly with their students in a public place, such as a local library.
The program also helps legal immigrants learn English as a second language (ESL). Tutors may also work with pre-GED, or pre-HSE students, and students studying for the U.S. Citizenship Exam.
Adult New Readers serves those who live and work in Warren and nearby counties.
There is a minimum one-year commitment required to be a volunteer tutor.
