Inner City Youth Opportunities’ Mission

The mission of Inner City Youth Opportunities is to develop educated, responsible and caring  low income inner city youth in grades K - 12  to be successful on school.


The Goals of Inner City Youth Opportunities are:

  • Work to close the education gap for children living in under resourced communities
  • Utilize the Search Institute's Developmental Asset Framework to position ICYO as an external/community asset that helps strengthen our children's internal developmental assets and values
  • Inspire our Youth to Love Learning, motivate, and encourage students to graduate from high school, continue their education and pursue their passions

 

Program Overview

The Year-Round Academic Intervention program is focused on early childhood literacy and closing the educational gap and addressing the devastating impact the pandemic has had on our children's education.

 

  • Schedule: School year: Monday - Thursday 5pm – 7:15 pm; Summer Bridge: Monday - Thursday 1p – 3p (following the morning Summer Tennis Camp Program)
  • Location: ICYO Learning Center in Roselawn
  • Programming: One on one to One on Three tutoring, homework completion, skill strengthening, early childhood literacy, practice on technology and computers, individualized and small group reading, special projects, Financial Literacy Education through the UC Alpaugh Family Foundation Modules , STEM projects (Steve Spangler Science Experiments) and asset development activities.
  • Additional Program Highlights: Daily healthy meal and snacks provided, transportation to and from all activities, fully subsidized for all students, donated school supplies, birthday presents and holiday parties, and Christmas “adopt a family” gifts, sponsored summer camps: Cincinnati Nature Center Day Camp, Camp Ernst, Camp JOY, New Day Ranch Horse Therapy Camp.


How our organization engages UC students

After School Homework Assistance & Tutoring Program for low income poverty level  inner city children in grades K-12. Many teaching aids provided such as personalized lesson plans, iPads, Laptop computers, small library.

Days and Times: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 5:30 pm - 7:15 pm

Our Homework Assistance and Tutoring Program emphasizes Early Childhood Literacy (grades K - 4), reading, reading comprehension, language arts, writing skills, math, science (Steve Spangler Science Club with science kits), other academic areas covered. ICYO provides supplemental materials to fill the CPS school gaps with Rebecca Sitton Spelling & Language Arts Work Books, Educators Publishing Service Phonics books, literacy reading book & workbooks, writing composition books along with individualized lesson plans. New this fall (2021) students using their Summer Bridge Workbooks. 

NEW Program: Financial Literacy Education: Modules from the UC Alpaugh Family Economic Center

New this year at our Learning Center is our newly remodeled kitchen through a grant from Xavier University Department of Health Services. We will be teaching how to prepare healthy meals & snacks. We also will be growing leafy winter greens in our donated Juice Plus Aeroponics Tower Garden and in the spring of 2020,

ICYO offers year-round field trips for which volunteer chaperones are needed on certain Saturdays.
