Breakthrough T1D

Breakthrough T1D is a global organization dedicated to accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent, and treat Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) and its complications. Founded in 1970 by parents determined to find a cure for their children, Breakthrough T1D has become the world’s largest nonprofit funder of T1D research. With a mission to improve lives while driving toward a world without T1D, the organization funds innovative research, advocates for policies that support the T1D community, and provides education and support for individuals and families affected by the disease. Through collaboration with scientists, healthcare professionals, and community leaders, Breakthrough T1D envisions a future where no one has to experience the burden of T1D.

Breakthrough T1D supports University of Cincinnati (UC) students through various initiatives aimed at enhancing their college experience while managing Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). One significant avenue of support is the collaboration with the College Diabetes Network (CDN), which has an active chapter at UC. Established in 2016, this student-led group provides a platform for peer support, resources, and advocacy, fostering a community where students can share experiences and strategies for managing T1D on campus. Additionally, UC's campus dining services accommodate students with dietary concerns, including those managing T1D, through programs like "Simple Servings," which provide safe and healthy food choices. Breakthrough T1D also benefits from its national partnership with Delta Tau Delta, a fraternity committed to supporting the T1D community through fundraising and advocacy efforts. At the beginning of this month, the UC chapter of Delta Tau Delta held a donut fundraiser, raising both awareness and funds for Breakthrough T1D’s mission. Through these collaborative efforts—whether through student-led networks, campus resources, or fraternity-driven fundraising—Breakthrough T1D and its partners strive to create a supportive environment that empowers UC students with T1D to thrive academically and personally.
